Abstract
Spinal paragonimiasis is an uncommon ectopic manifestation of the lung fluke.
12 cases of surgically confirmed spinal paragonimiasis through 1960 to 1976 -treated at Yonsei University, Medical Center, Severance ¢¥Hospital are analyzed and reviewed.
The symptoms and signs are not different from benign spinal cord tumors except for a history of blood tinged sputum, positive chest X-ray and skin test etc.
Although the extradural space in the lower thoracic region is the most frequent site of affection, intradural and intramedullary space is also affected.
A lesion of spinal paragonimiasis is usually consisted of granulomata and multiple cysts with chocolate colored content in contrast to a brain lesion which has granuloma with calcification.
Therefore it is suggested that the clinical symptoms of spinal paragonimiasis are manifested earlier before a lesion goes into chronic stage subsequently with a calcification in the granulomata.
Immediate decompressive laminectomy with excision of the lesion . supported by chemotherapy is the treatment of choice.
When treated early, prognosis of this type of spinal manifestation is usually favorable.
